The Indicator Strategy for State of
Environment Assessment and Reporting
in Southern Africa is a regional
collaborative initiative involving
SARDC, the Department of Environmental
Affairs and Tourism of South Africa,
and national partners from all the
14 SADC countries. The strategy seeks to
develop a core set of indicators for
State of Environment reporting in
Southern Africa.
The strategy began with the selection of a
draft set of indicators based on
internationally accepted criteria for
indicators of sustainability. The indicators
were then tested and revised over four years.
Methods for data collection, coordination,
presentation and sharing were also developed
over the four years. The project builds on
existing capacity and experience, filling
identified gaps in understanding, technology
and capacity. It strengthens the capacity in
Southern Africa in the selection and use of
indicators, assessment of regional and global
environmental trends, analysis of data, and
state of environment reporting.
